The date sounds great to me.
I thought we simplify numbering and use 4.x with x incrementing with
every release (as with 3.0.x before) but with a shorter number.
Okay, the advantage of 4.x.y is that we can use y==0 for regular
releases and can increment y if we have "broken release fixes" or the
like and don't have to switch between numbering schemes 4.x and 4.x.y
in case of such a fixup relases.
So if you agree that the planned +1 release after 4.0.0 is 4.1.0 (and
not 4.0.1), I agree with 4.0.0.
